E Ola Ka 'Olelo Hawai'i - Learning and Living the Hawaiian Language Through Authentic Assessments

Roundtable   +   Assessment   +   High School
The Hawaiian language is taught as a second language in Hawai'i schools. Although once on the brink of extinction, the Hawaiian language has again come alive within the Coalition construct at Maryknoll High School. The school's change in schedule and the adoption of the Coalition's educational philosophy offer opportunities in authentic learning and interaction, and the implementation of meaningful thematic study and authentic exhibitions have made Hawaiian a living and thriving language. Student and teacher testimonies, in addition to samples of student work, will illustrate the degree of success this Coalition school has enjoyed in second language education.
