Awakening the Sleeping Giants: The Importance of Teacher Leadership in Sustaining School Change

Workshop   +   Managing Whole School Change   +   Everyone
From CES work, we learn that it is the career teachers who set the norms for how students are viewed and taught, how teachers relate to each other, to their students, to the administrators, and to parents. Yet few teachers are prepared or willing to acknowledge and accept this responsibility. San Jose State University, in partnership with several neighboring school districts, offers a Master's degree in Education with a focus on Teacher Leadership. Teachers enroll as school teams. Classes are action research-based and team-taught by SJSU faculty and K-12 practitioners. The concept of resiliency is used as a lens for viewing school change.
