How Can Communication Between Students, Teachers and Parents Build Community?

Roundtable   +   Managing Whole School Change   +   High School
In a traditional school setting, there is little time for meaningful, personal discussion between teachers and students. Teachers and parents often speak only via phone about grades, assignments or behavior problems. When and how do we talk about broader educational issues, or our own views on school-related issues? When do students get to share how they feel and what they care about? To increase communication among members of our school community, we have created Chat Nights and student/teacher lunches for members of the school to talk casually about school-related concerns and topics. We'll share our experiences with you and discuss ideas to create a school community that allows everyone an individual voice and a sense of connection with others.
