| By creating and projecting their spirits, traditions, cultures and identities, students are the heart of schools. Often, however, they are also the most disenfranchised group. Discussions about assessment, instruction and reform occur without their input. Is it any wonder that they can be the staunchest defenders of the status quo and the most vocal opponents of school change? Participants in this workshop will examine student empowerment in terms of the Ten Common Principles. We will discuss the compromises, assumptions and benefits of classroom activities that support students as they move towards increased ownership of their schools. |
