The Scholarship of Teaching: New Thinking About Inquiry for Teachers and Schools

Workshop   +   Cycle of Inquiry   +   Everyone
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching recently instituted a teacher scholars program that supports the inquiry of 20 teacher scholars from across the nation. In this session, three of these scholars (all of whom teach in Coalition schools) will talk about their Carnegie projects. The foci of the three projects are: (1) instituting portfolio assessment in middle school, (2) creating a liberatory classroom in eleventh grade English, and (3) developing student voice through "author's chair" in kindergarten. The presenters will draw connections between their scholarship and the larger reform efforts at their schools, as well as the connections between their inquiry and the Ten Common Principles. With the audience participants, we will discuss the value of inquiry as a methodology for changing practice and reforming schools.
