Supporting New Small Schools: The Oakland Incubator Model

Workshop   +   School Design   +   Everyone
How can districts, CES centers, and community organizations work together to best support the creation of effective new small schools? BayCES staff in Oakland will present their New Small Schools Incubator model. This model, developed in collaboration with a local community organization, will support the creation of ten new small schools in three years, as outlined in a recently passed school board policy. Workshop participants will work in small groups with Oakland's design principles to engage in authentic practice with real new design team case studies. We invite design teams to bring their challenges in order to get feedback and engage participants in "real-life" incubator work. The workshop will end with a discussion exploring the challenges and rewards of creating a support system and network for new schools.
