Following Graduates as a Form of Accountability

Workshop   +   Assessment   +   Everyone
How can schools respond to public and political demands for accountability without twisting their programs to meet standards that do not accurately reflect school goals? This workshop will present the methods and results of Central Park East's longitudinal study of its graduates. Participants will be invited to devise their own ways to report on long-term outcomes to satisfy public demands for accountability. The CPE study invited school participants--teachers, students and parents--to identify their goals for student outcomes, and then surveyed and interviewed graduates in order to determine whether graduates believed that the school had achieved those goals. In the study, graduates pointed to relationships with their teachers and peers as the locus for academic and social-emotional growth, and described how their later academic growth emanated from the school's nurturing early interests and passions.
