Before the First Day: What Are the Nuts and Bolts of Creating a New School?

Workshop   +   School Design   +   Everyone
What are the nuts and bolts involved in creating a charter elementary school reflective of the Coalition Principles? What needs to happen before we open on the first day of school? How do we think about equity and diversity to ensure that the school choice and education reform movements include everybody? Come discuss the multitude of issues involved in starting a charter school, including staff, space, students, and program. The Highlander Charter School, a new elementary school in Providence, is based on principles of individualized learning within a community environment. Come participate in a discussion about starting a new school and learn from Highlander's process. Look at the pitfalls, challenges, and successes we encountered and receive resources and materials to help you think about steps to take as you start or restructure a school.
