Aspiring Principals to Inspiring School Leaders

Two years ago, a number of Coalition school leaders came together to design a program that would recruit and train principals for small, innovative, collaborative schools. The result, called the Aspiring Principals Program, employs a full-year, in-school residency to foster the leadership development of participants. Aspiring Principals work in exemplary schools with seasoned principal mentors, earning university credit and principal certification for their school-based study. The program graduated its first Aspiring Principals in July 2000; in this session, they discuss their roles as acting and assistant principals, and the ways in which the program prepared them for these roles.
