Tapping Your School's Professional Potential: Considerations for Developing a Comprehensive Beginning and Mentor Teacher Program

Workshop   +   Cycle of Inquiry   +   Everyone
Over the next several years, a large number of talented teachers will be leaving the profession because they are retiring, burned out, or fed up with the sociopolitical and economic circumstances of teaching. This fact presents a huge problem when combined with the growing reality of teacher shortages. What can we do in schools to make our vital profession a more rewarding and professional experience for both our veteran and novice teachers? The intent of this two-hour, participatory workshop is to explore this essential question by considering ways that schools/districts can develop a Beginning Teacher Induction and Mentoring (BTIM) Program. In doing so, participants will understand why it is essential that each school/district develop its own BTIM Program, what conditions need to exist for developing such a program, what additional resources are available to participants, and the benefits and challenges of developing a BTIM program.
