Final Exams Out, Student Mastery and Achievement In: Developing a Performance-Based Assessment Program Aligned to State Standards

Workshop   +   Assessment   +   High School
Aligning a math curriculum to state standards is a tedious process, but developing an assessment program based on specific content standards that include review, assessment and remediation can be an undaunting task. Participants will learn how the math department at a high school in rural Maine spent two years aligning their curriculum with the State of Maine standards. They will see an assessment program that requires students to master a limited number of essential skills, and a remediation program that provides intensive support to assist students in meeting standards. Opportunities for discussion will revolve around how to move from the "course objective-based" mid-year and final exam to a comprehensive assessment program based on a number of essential skills and areas of knowledge.
