Going Public: Selling Performance Assessment to Politicians, Policymakers and the Public

Workshop   +   Assessment   +   Everyone
This country is fixated on high-stakes tests. Presidential candidates embraced them, New York State Regents endorsed them, policymakers and the media believe they will drive school reform. But do they? What is the impact of high-stakes tests on school culture? To develop an alternative, 40 small NY state public schools from Rochester to New York City have organized themselves into the NY Performance Standards Consortium. The Consortium has created a SYSTEM of performance assessment and developed an approach to assessment that supports, rather than undermines, school reform. Facilitators will share background information about the Consortium and make available materials developed by the coalition as it seeks to persuade NY State Education officials to allow for multiple forms of assessment in lieu of high-stakes testing.
