Souhegan High School Democratic Governance: Success and Challenges

Roundtable   +   Managing Whole School Change   +   High School
Souhegan High School faces a dilemma in its democratic governance. Souhegan's Community Council, consisting of students, faculty, staff, school board members and community members, has been responsible for passing major school initiatives, including approving a move to school-wide block scheduling. When the school was studying a change to its schedule, the Community Council took the lead in sponsoring a school-wide binding referendum on the proposed schedule change. The block scheduling proposal passed with a overwhelming majority despite initial opposition. Despite its initial success, the Community Council has lost focus and presence. . Participants in this workshop will learn about the successes and challenges of Souhegan's Community Council and engage in a discussion about the dilemmas of democratic governance.
