The Role of Students in Reform Leadership: Transcending Student Voice

Workshop   +   Managing Whole School Change   +   High School
In the spring of 2000, a very small, diverse group of students founded Far West High School's "Leadership Class" with the desire to become full partners in the school's reform work. Our first project is an overhaul of Far West's writing curriculum, beginning with our own definition of what makes writing "good" and how we, as a community, determine that quality. Working by ourselves, we are rapidly proving that students can go beyond having a "voice" to be powerful reformers and leaders of reform. In this session, we will share our experiences and engage participants in discussions about philosophies and practices surrounding student leadership and the role of student voice in school reform.
