The Coach As Good Teacher: External Facilitation of School Reform
Facilitator(s): Rosann Tung, Mary Hastings, Jay Feldman

Workshop   +   Leadership: change process   +   Everyone
Educational initiatives have used coaches, or external facilitators of school change, since the 1950's. However, little research has documented what coaches do or how they do it (Sulla, 1998). In this workshop, we will examine the role of the coach in the whole school change process. We will include an overview of findings from a current research study, discuss strategies used by coaches and the challenges in their work, and provide examples of successful tools and protocols used by coaches. One coach will discuss her work in detail, describing concrete situations she faces in schools. Participants will address actual coaching dilemmas.
