Talking about Race in a Predominantly White Classroom
Facilitator(s): Michael Sory
| Workshop + Classroom Practice: curriculum & instruction + High School |
| Talking about race and culture is more than celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. and Cinco de Mayo, yet many classrooms never get beyond the teaching of heroes and holidays when attempting to incorporate a multicultural world view. White students are also often left feeling that they have no vocabulary for the discussion of race issues. Go beyond traditional teaching methods and give your students the vocabulary to discuss issues of racial identity development, personal biases, and the state of race relations today. Given at the NW Symposium 2001, this presentation will have participants brainstorming, challenging their own perceptions, and will leave them with many resources to better address race issues and racial identity in their classrooms. |
