Size Matters: Restructuring Urban High Schools into Small Learning Communities

In this session, participants will learn about two large urban high schools in Massachusetts (the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, and Malden High School) that have restructured into small learning communities. Participants will explore the benefits and pitfalls inherent in these different models of redesign. Using the consultancy protocol, facilitators will guide a conversation around a dilemma stemming from our work. Topics may include: honoring choice while ensuring equity; balancing autonomy in the small school within the context of a large, comprehensive institution; supporting teachers as we build professional community; partnering with another school to learn more about this work; and sustaining the work of redesign.
