From the Stage to the Page: Using Theatrical Devices to Make Shakespeare's Works Come Alive
Facilitator(s): Connie Borab, Damon Smith

Workshop   +   Classroom Practice: curriculum & instruction   +   High School
This interactive workshop presents a unique approach to exploring and understanding Shakespeare's work. Rather than starting with the "page" (the text), it starts with the "stage" and work of actors, directors, and designers, which is then used to lead into an understanding of the text. The process of exploration builds understanding and skills development through a connection between the themes in students' lives and the themes in Shakespeare's plays. This process also helps students lacking in confidence about their reading comprehension skills interpret the play by using intrapersonal and kinesthetic intelligences. The participants in this workshop will be asked to demonstrate this process of exploration by employing several theatrical devices to be used in the classroom, reflecting on the process, and applying the approach to different works.
