The Role of a Fairness Committee in a Democratically-Governed School
Facilitator(s): Ali Lenobel, Thomas Conrad, Nora Lyon, Linda Rich

Roundtable   +   School Design: structures   +   High School
"Students are too often the forgotten heart of school reform." (Horace, September 1994) In this roundtable, teachers and students from the Scarsdale Alternative School will discuss ways we have included student voice in the governance of our school. We will place special emphasis on our Fairness Committee, which involves students and teachers in the enforcement of agreed-upon school rules as well as in settling the various issues that inevitably surface in a high school community. Through the exploration of specific fairness cases, participants will have a chance to discuss the value of this kind of student participation in building high school community; we will also strategize how to avoid some of the pitfalls that can arise in creating and running such a program.
