From One School to Six, New York City-Style: Creating the Julia Richman Education Complex
Facilitator(s): Ann Cook, Lucy Matos

Workshop   +   School Design: structures   +   High School
Not so long ago, Julia Richman High School was considered one of New York City's large failing high schools. Now redesigned, the same building has become an educational complex housing six small, successful schools (four high schools, a pre-K to 8 elementary school, and a junior high school for children with autism) and numerous shared facilities including a student health center, a professional development center, and an infant-toddler facility. How did this happen? What values and assumptions informed the transformation? When the big school closed, what happened to athletic teams, building security, the building principal? This session will focus on two essential features of large school transformation--small school autonomy and consensus-building decision-making.
Date/Time: Friday, 4:00pm - 6:00pm   Room: CC 608   Session #158
