| Workshop + Classroom Practice: assessment + Everyone |
| The United States is obsessed with standardized testing; the tests are the cornerstone of Bush's educational plan. Policymakers and the media believe that tests can drive school reform. But do they? What does it look like from inside the classroom? What is the impact of high-stakes testing on school culture? A network of schools seeking alternatives has organized the NY Performance Standards Consortium. The Consortium has developed a SYSTEM of performance assessment, created an incorporated review board and created an approach to assessment that supports, rather than undermines, school reform. Facilitators will share background information about the Consortium and make available materials developed by the Coalition in its campaign to persuade New York State's education officials to allow for multiple forms of assessment in lieu of high-stakes testing. |
