Geometry with a Lemon Twist: A Project-Oriented Approach
Facilitator(s): Linda Morrell

Roundtable   +   Classroom Practice: curriculum & instruction   +   High School
This session presents a methodology that has evolved over a long teaching career with the catalyst of a 4x4 block schedule, and presents an innovative way to teach geometry. With this approach, the drudgery and boredom that often accompanies high school mathematics gives way to excitement and creativity. The activities to be discussed are designed for a high school geometry class, and can be used effectively to enhance geometry taught on a block schedule. We will discuss the essential questions, "When am I ever going to use this?" and "How do we make the connections from geometry to other branches of mathematics and the real world?" The benefits of a project-oriented approach will be discussed. Samples of projects relating coordinate geometry, volume, vocabulary, congruence and proof will be shared.
Date/Time: Saturday, 8:00am - 9:00am   Room: Sheraton 412   Session #12
