A Conversation with the Author of "Upstart Startup: Creating and Sustaining a Public Charter School"

Facilitator(s): Jim Nehring

| Workshop + School Design: structures + Everyone |
In 1996, James Nehring became Principal Teacher of the new Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School in Devens, MA. The Parker School was designed specifically as a CES school and became the focus of much attention both within the Coalition and the wider world as it grew from 120 to 350 students in four years. In many ways, Parker has been a beacon in its application of CES principles, but the road has been rocky, and there have been many bumps along the way! In "Upstart Startup: Creating and Sustaining a Public Charter School," Nehring shares his unique perspective of stepping out of his principal role to become full-time teacher in Parker's Arts and Humanities Domain. His tale is both personal and illustrative of issues faced by many CES and startup schools.
Jim will be signing copies of his book at the Fall Forum at an event called, Meet the Authors. |
